The short version
Who this may suit
Consider it for mixed written and visual notes. Verify the supported app and the devices you will actually use.
A good fit if…
Sketching and annotation are part of how you understand or explain a topic.
Look elsewhere if…
Your essential requirement is a directly readable folder of Markdown files.
OneNote belongs on a shortlist when your thinking uses both words and sketches. Microsoft’s current product page describes digital ink, annotation and collaboration. Those capabilities make a mixed notebook worth considering, particularly if a diagram explains something that would take a long paragraph to describe. The useful test is whether you can find and reuse that material later.
Choose the supported Windows app
Do not confuse the current OneNote on Windows with the retired app named OneNote for Windows 10. Microsoft says the latter reached end of support on October 14, 2025 and moved toward read-only use. It no longer receives fixes or technical support. A screenshot from an old tutorial may therefore describe the wrong application.
Before following setup instructions, check the exact app name and the account containing your notebooks. If you already have important notes, follow Microsoft’s migration guidance and confirm that they are present in the supported app before removing anything. An installation that opens successfully is not proof that every notebook has transferred.
Give visual notes a useful label
Picture a short lesson about a home workspace. You might sketch a desk arrangement, annotate a possible change and type the reason beside it. A title such as “Desk layout: light from the left” tells your future self much more than “Notes 12.” Add the date when it changes the meaning of the decision.
For a study page, separate the explanation you were given from the question you still have. A rough diagram can remain rough if its labels are clear. Spending a long time making the page attractive is optional; identifying the part you do not understand is the action that makes the next study session useful.
Check the actual device combination
A pen demonstration does not establish how writing will feel on your hardware. Try a short handwritten passage, a small sketch and a correction using the device you would carry. Then reopen the material on the second device where you normally review notes. Check legibility, navigation and whether the particular editing features you need are available there.
Do the same for sharing. Use a harmless sample and confirm which account can open it and what that person can change. Features promoted on a product overview may depend on the application, account or subscription. We have not performed a cross-platform feature comparison or tested handwriting recognition.
Decide whether the notebook helps you return
OneNote is a reasonable candidate when a flexible mix of typed and visual material matches your work. If your main need is a collection of directly readable Markdown files, compare a file-based option instead. If you need repeated records with a strict set of fields, examine whether a database-oriented tool would make those records easier to review.
Keep the first trial to one active topic. At the next session, find the unresolved question without retracing every page. That is a more meaningful acceptance check than counting the number of formats the app can hold.
